How Language Works

This module aims to make students aware of the links between the different levels of language, such as grammar, phonetics and pragmatics/discourse. It also enables students to make broad-based analyses of instances of written and spoken language, which can be applied in learning and teaching situations.

The IPA is the major as well as the oldest representative organisation for phoneticians. It was established in 1886 in Paris. The aim of the IPA is to promote the scientific study of phonetics and the various practical applications of that science.
IPA Fonts (Windows / Mac)
There are many sources of IPA Fonts. This souce came from Henry Rogers website (http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~rogers/fonts.html). Click on the appropriate link above (Windows / Mac) to download the zipped or hqx file for your computer. You will need to uncompress these fonts and put them in your operating system's font folder to use them. If you don't know what this means you can try this ‘zip tutorial’ or find someone to help you. Once you've installed the IPA Fonts on your computer you will need an easy way to select the symbols you wish to use - this IPA Font Reference should help you do that.

This module introduces students to current theories of language learning. These theories provide the rationale for a range of approaches and techniques used in the teaching of second or foreign languages. The weekly sessions will comprise lecture input and seminar discussions.

TESOL 1

This module enables students to acquire professional teaching skills in various ways: through models of good practice, an introduction theoretical principles and an opportunity to practise teaching in a ‘safe setting’. Placement is a co-requisite for this module. The placement aims to examine the roles of language learners and teachers in the classroom and introduce practical language teaching and classroom management skills.
